The Comprehensive Guide to Orthodontic Retainers

Achieving that perfect smile is a significant milestone, and orthodontic treatment plays a crucial role in this journey. Once braces are removed, the next crucial step is often overlooked but equally important – wearing orthodontic retainers. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the different types of orthodontic retainers, the importance of wearing them, the recommended duration, what to do if they are lost, and essential tips on keeping them clean.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers:

Orthodontic retainers come in various types, each with its unique characteristics. The two main categories are removable and fixed retainers.

  1. Hawley Retainers:

  • These are the classic, removable retainers.

  • Composed of a combination of metal wires and acrylic.

  • Custom-made to fit the roof of the mouth or the tongue side of the teeth.

  • Easily adjustable.

  1. Essix Retainers:

  • Clear and removable retainers made from transparent plastic.

  • Made from 3D scans of your teeth rather than those goopy, gaggy impressions

  • Virtually invisible, making them a popular choice for aesthetic reasons.

  • Molded to fit over the entire arch of teeth.

  1. Fixed or Bonded Retainers:

  • Permanently attached to the back of the teeth.

  • Usually made of a thin wire bonded to the lingual surface.

  • Provides continuous, long-term support.

Importance of Wearing Retainers:

  1. Maintaining Teeth Alignment:

  • Retainers play a crucial role in preserving the results of orthodontic treatment.

  • Teeth have a tendency to shift back to their original positions, and retainers prevent this regression.

  1. Stabilizing the Bite:

  • Retainers help stabilize the bite alignment achieved during orthodontic treatment.

  • This is particularly important for individuals who have undergone extensive corrections.

  1. Preventing Relapse:

  • Teeth are prone to movement even after braces are removed.

  • Consistent retainer wear is essential to prevent relapse and maintain the desired outcome.

Duration of Retainer Wear:

The duration for wearing retainers varies from person to person, and it is often recommended by the orthodontist. However, a common guideline is to wear them full-time for the first few months, gradually transitioning to nightly wear over time.

  1. Full-Time Wear:

  • Initially, wear retainers full-time, removing them only for eating, brushing, and flossing.

  • This intensive wear ensures the teeth stabilize in their new positions.

  1. Nighttime Wear:

  • As time progresses and teeth become more stable, many individuals transition to wearing retainers only at night.

  • Consistency is key to prevent any unwanted shifting.

What to Do If You Lose Your Retainers:

Losing retainers can be a common occurrence, but it's important to address the situation promptly to prevent any setbacks in your orthodontic progress.

  1. Contact Our Office:

  • Inform Dr. Bloom as soon as possible if you lose your retainers.

  • Dr. Bloom and his staff can provide guidance on the next steps, which may include getting replacements.

  1. Temporary Solutions:

  • In the interim, consider using a backup retainer if you have one.

  • If not, wearing the lost retainer for a few hours each day until a replacement is obtained can help prevent significant shifts.

  1. Avoid Prolonged Delays:

  • Prompt action is crucial to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original positions.

  • Delaying replacement can result in the need for additional orthodontic treatment.

How to Keep Retainers Clean:

Maintaining proper hygiene for your retainers is essential for both oral health and the longevity of the retainers themselves.

  1. Regular Cleaning Routine:

  • Clean your retainers daily using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or toothpaste.

  • While many people may tell you to avoid toothpaste because of its abrasive nature, Dr. Bloom encourages his patients to use toothpaste to help remove the plaque and tartar that tend to accumulate on the retainers. It may leave the retainers a little less clear than before but thats better than wearing dirty retainers all night.

  1. Soaking:

  • Soak your retainers regularly in a denture-cleaning solution or a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar.

  • This helps remove bacteria and prevent unpleasant odors.

  • Note: Some denture cleaners contain persulfates which may cause an allergice reaction in some patients. If you show any signs of a reaction from the denture/retainer cleaning tablets, please stop using them immediately.

  1. Avoid Hot Water:

  • Hot water can cause the retainer to lose its shape.

  • Use lukewarm water for cleaning and rinsing.

  • Never boil your retainers or put them in the dishwater. They will distort, warp and bend and will need to be replaced if that happens.

  1. Handle with Care:

  • When not in use, store your retainers in their case.

  • Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures

  • Never wrap your retainers in a napkin or paper towel. This often results in damaged retainers or they will be accidentally thrown in the trash!

  • Keep your retainers away from pets and animals, especially dogs! Animals seem to think that retainers are chew toys.

Orthodontic retainers are a crucial component of maintaining the results achieved through braces or other orthodontic treatments. Understanding the different types of retainers, the importance of consistent wear, the recommended duration, and how to address issues such as loss or cleanliness is essential for a successful post-orthodontic journey. By prioritizing retainer care and following your orthodontist's guidance, you can enjoy the benefits of a beautifully aligned smile for years to come!
